Book Cakes...Geniused.
The ECG has done her fair share of book cakes in her time. There's the ever-popular Graduation Book Cake, the Fairy Tale Birthday Book Cake, the bookish couple's wedding cake, if they can read it, the ECG can feed it to them in glorious cakey form. One of her favorite Book cakes is featured on the ECG's very own Blog HERE (bet you didn't know she even had a blog).
But, as you already know, the ECG is a bit of a slow learner. Despite having made hundreds of book cakes in her cakey life, she always struggled with sizing, marking, and spacing the indents for the book bindings, and don't even get her started on trying to find an impression pin that rolled in the right direction to make fondant imprinted to look like pages (Spoiler alert: they don't exist).
So when her friends Catherine and Vincent decided to take the plunge and have their first human child (they already have three adorable fur-babies) the ECG decided that she would take advantage of the couple's book-themed baby shower to create a Book Cakey Contour Comb
And, as always, all she can do is ask herself Why the hell she didn't invent this years ago. It's so simple, but so effective! The ECG used hers on a 6" tall sheet cake, which is split into three book spines on the comb, but the comb can be use on a 4" tall cake that splits the cake into two book spines, or a 2" tall tier to make one book. Simply comb the cake on three sides with the Book Pages (fine zig-zag) side of the comb and comb the final side with the Book Binding comb.
Insert some 1/2" wide strips of Mexican Paste (equal parts fondant and gum paste) cranked out with our Easy Extruder into the pages for the illusion of book covers. Cover the top and sides with fondant for a front cover and spines, and you'll have the most realistic book cakes you've ever made! And, yep, we include a step by step photo tutorial with the combs. Wanna see just how easy it is? Video time!!
NOTE: We've redesigned the comb since our video to one double sided comb. (It saves you money, and you don't have to worry about getting your cakes to the exact height of the top edge of the old comb style.)
You can get the stencils we used on the cover in our Watercolor Welcome Baby Mesh Stencil Set. We've even put together a set of the Petal Dusts that we used to paint this so you don't even have to guess!
And check out our set of Baby Book Ribbons Mesh Stencils that just happen to fit perfectly on the spines of the book combs.
Doing a Bookish Wedding Cake, no sweat! Our Love, Honor, and Cherish Ribbons Mesh Stencils fit on the book spines as well! So do our Message Ribbon Classic Letters Mesh Stencil Set and our Message Ribbon Relaxed Script Mesh Stencil Set
Oh, and both Message Ribbon Sets can be customized with any Message, so you can create any book title you'd like!
Gift Box Cake Contour Combs!
The latest in our line of "I can't believe I didn't think of that" Cakey Contour Combs has arrived!
We're not gonna say that this comb makes cakes frost themselves, but it's damn close!
The comb is contoured to create a perfect "box lid" lip right out of buttercream as you frost the cake. One easy step to a perfectly level buttercream frosted cake with a lid! Leave the fondant in the cupboard kids, while you're at it, leave the rolling pin, the ruler, the right angle, craft knife, and all the other little odds and ends that make creating a Gift Box or Hat Box cake the stuff of migranes.
These bad boys are sized to work perfectly for a 4" tall or a 6" tall tier, and they can handle any size or shape tier. Frost a square for a pristine present, a hexagon or a round tier for a happy little hat box...whatever you choose, you'll flip your lid (sorry, had to do it) over how quickly buttercream or ganache transforms a cake into a perfect present.
